Weldon Lister is a third-generation artist/craftsman using the simplest of tools, a hammer & chisel, to engrave the most intricate and beautiful details in steel, gold, silver and bronze. In 1979 at age 17 he began apprenticeship training under the watchful eye of his father, Master engraver W.E. "Bill" Lister who apprenticed under his uncle, Austin Lee Lister in the late 1940’s. Though he is well versed in all the traditional firearm engraving styles, Weldon’s favorite can best be described as a blend of Gustave Young, Cuno Helfricht and L.D. Nimschke. In addition to engraving firearms, knives, custom-made belt buckles, jewelry and musical instruments, Weldon is an accomplished (though not overly prolific) knife maker, preferring to make lock-blade, folding knives. Using the "stock removal" method of knife making, Weldon’s knives are not only a functional tool, but serve as a custom "palette" upon which to display his art. Never one to rest on his laurels, in 2006 Weldon had the honor of attending the Grand Master’s Program held at the GRS Training Center in Emporia, Kansas. Weldon spent a week studying with Phillipe Griffnee of Belgium who was assisted by Master engraver, Sam Alfano. 2007 saw Weldon selected to participate in his second Grand Master’s Program, this time studying with the incomparable Winston Churchill. His clientele established primarily by word-of-mouth over the last four decades, Weldon’s work is in some of the finest collections the world over. His desire is to create works for those with the sophistication to appreciate the art of engraving as performed by him. To see more of Weldon's work, click here to visit www.WeldonLister.com. He learned scrim shaw techniches from his grandfather, a merchant mariner who practiced scrimshaw while aboard ship. Building on what he learned from his grandfather, Mike has developed his own methods and style. Scrimshaw on Elepant Ivory Ivan Tibor Mate (5 items) Ivan Tibor Mate was born in Hungary right after WWII. After eight years of mandatory elementary education, his father Laszlo (m.h.r.i.p.) entered him in a three year apprenticeship contract in jewelry engraving with the Watch and Jewelry trading Company, a government owned and controlled giant firm under Communist rule in 1959. After three years and proving competency in the trade and in connected studies (Geometry, Mathematics, Art History etc.) by formal exams, Ivan earned Journeyman status in the craft of Jewelry Engraving. Two years later Ivan started engraving on his own in the private sector. In 1978 he immigrated to Canada. Employed by Henry Birks and Sons in the Phillips Square Engraving Department, Ivan met Mr. Frank (Frantz) Letschnig, a brilliant engraver of Austrian origin, who generously helped him with further guidance. Ivan refers to Mr. Letschnig as to his true Master in engraving. After one year with the Birks Co. he opened a modest workshop on Cathcart, the opposite side of the street from Birks, and offered his services for jewelry retailers and wholesalers. In 1982 he was granted an immigrant visa and entered the United States as a "craftsman skilled in a trade of demand." Renting a small office on Hill Street in the heart of the Los Angeles Jewelry Center, he received impulses from and exchanged ideas with accomplished engravers who practiced jewelry engraving by very high standards and with great humility. For Ivan, Los Angeles was the real test in flexible applications and challenging calls, as the jobs were never stereotypes, the next work piece could have been something never imagined or done before, and often it was. After twenty years in L.A. planning "semi retirement," Ivan moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and five years later to San Antonio, Texas. In Texas, while enjoying the liberties of that state's relaxed gun laws and the connected liberties Mr. Mate started to experiment with gun engraving. By then he was already sixty-two years old, with forty-eight years of experiences in the Engraving Craft. He believes that the ultimate purpose of ornamenting objects by engraving is to please people and to gain personal satisfaction during the process, which makes it similar to an act of loving kindness. Beside that satisfaction, as fringe benefits one might hope for earning a living, and have flexible time management if engaged in this beautiful and noble profession. Besides his commitments to engraving, Ivan's interests include Journalism, Foreign Trade, Psychology, Counter Terrorism and National Security. Ivan has become a naturalized Citizen of the United States, and practices his trade here for twenty seven years, first under the business name of Engraving By Ivan, and since 1994 as Engraving Studio. September 2009 marks his fiftieth anniversary in the craft of engraving. To contact Ivan Tibor Mate directly, click here. An Air Force wife at the time, in 1995 she moved to northern California. There, Tira approached Fairfield Cycle, a Harley Davidson™ dealer, and asked about custom engraving on Harleys. Her first work on metal was a fully engraved custom cycle in an art deco style named "Avalon". With that first bike, she began her training with Benno Heune of Modesto, California, who introduced her to the basics of tool making, pneumatic gravers and basic metallurgy. In 1999 Tira relocated permanently to Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She continued engraving motorcycles and expanded into firearms, jewelry, knives and musical instruments. Always interested in unique works, Tira has engraved unusual items like brass bells for fire trucks, military installations and yachts. She also restores rare and collectible items like parts for classic cars. Tira has studied engraving with well known engravers including Ken Hunt and Winston Churchill. In 2008, Tira started teaching engraving at the GRS Training Center in Emporia, Kansas, and also teaches at the School of Horology in Columbia, PA. In addition to engraving and teaching, Tira is a moderator of the popular engraver's forum, "The Engraver's Cafe," and is currently serving as Treasurer for the Firearms Engravers Guild of America.
